Molly Shannon is an actress and comedian who appeared on Saturday Night Live from 1995 to 2001.

In 2017, she received the Film Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actress for her work in the film Other People.

She was born on September 16, 1964, in Shaker Heights, Ohio, to an Irish-American Catholic family.

His mother, Mary Margaret “Peg” Shannon, was a teacher and his father, James Francis Shannon, a sales manager. His maternal grandparents were both born in Ireland, his grandfather in Cloghmore, Achill, Mayo and his grandmother in Ballina, Co. Mayo.

Molly was not the only child of her parents as she had two sisters. She was the eldest and her sisters are Mary Shannon Beatty and Katie Shannon. Sadly, one of her sisters – Katie – died when she was young after being involved in an accident that claimed the lives of her, her mother and a cousin after their father was driving drunk .

Molly Shannon attended Dominic School in Shaker Heights for elementary school before moving to Hawken School in Gates Mills, Ohio for high school.

She also studied theater at New York University, where she graduated from the Tisch School of the Arts in 1987.

Career

Molly Shannon worked as a hostess at Cravings on Sunset Boulevard and as a culinary demonstrator at Gelson’s in Marina Del Rey.

She auditioned for the horror film remake of The Phantom of the Opera alongside Robert Englund and was cast in the role of Meg.

In the second season of Twin Peaks, she played “lucky hand” and in 1993 she appeared in three episodes of In Living Color, the first in a fake television commercial with Shawn Wayans as Chris Rock, the second in a sketch with Jim Carrey. as LAPD Sergeant Stacey Koon and the third part of a Star Trek parody.

In February 1995, she was hired as a lead actress on Saturday Night Live to replace Janeane Garofalo, who left the show mid-season due to creative differences.

Molly Shannon was one of the few remaining cast members, alongside David Spade, Norm Macdonald, Mark McKinney and Tim Meadows, when Lorne Michaels overhauled his cast and writers for the 21st season.
