In Billy: The Early Years in 2008, he played Billy Graham. In 2010, he played Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss in the David Fincher biographical drama The Social Network, for which he won the Toronto Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actor. This role earned him his first leading role.

In 2017, he received nominations for the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor and the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Luca Guadagnino’s romantic film Call Me by Your Name .
The following year, he played Martin D. Ginsburg in the film On the Basis of Sex (2018). In 2018, he starred in a Broadway production of Straight White Men.
In 2021, allegations emerged that Hammer committed numerous acts of serious abuse, sometimes sexual.
Hammer called the allegations an “online attack” and rejected them. He then dropped a few new ventures and his advertising and talent agency parted ways with him.
The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office said Hammer has a pending case with the LAPD and is looking into sexual assault allegations made against him in April 2023.
