ToggleTragedy in the B67 television tower
On May 9, 2000, three teenage girls climbed the tower to watch the VE Day fireworks. One of them fell and the other two followed her. Although they did not land completely on the ground, they were seriously injured. The last victim of the Tower of Death was the young girl who died first. A few days after the terrible accident, the authorities closed the entrance. In 2017, security guards were deployed after extreme climbers broke into the tower despite it being closed.
The tower’s omnidirectional television antenna transmits OTA broadcast signals for KXTV-TV channel 10 (virtual and broadcast) and KOVR-TV channels 13 (virtual) and 25 (broadcast). Near the KXTV/KOVR towers are the Channel 40 and KVIE-TV Channel 6 towers, as well as the Channel 3-Hurst-Argyle tower, which has two equally tall towers that form an impressive antenna farm.
The antennas on these towers are used by broadcasters who deliver programming to viewers in the Sacramento/Stockton/Modesto Designated Market Area (DMA) in California’s Central Valley.
Walnut Grove’s significant elevation and central location provide line of sight (LOS) to the adjacent flat valley terrain for 60 miles (100 kilometers) of signal coverage to the north (Sacramento) and south-south. East (Stockton). The towers also provide reasonably good coverage from the east side of the valley, through the foothills and Sierra Nevada mountains, to parts of San Francisco Bay on the west side (eastern counties of Solano and Contra Costa).
