Gomez was born to Mexican-American parents Francisco Gomez and Alejandra Gomez. She has the same parents as her three siblings; two brothers, Alex Gomez and Frankie Gomez and his younger sister Stephanie Gomez.
Gomez lived in Moreno Valley, where financial difficulties forced her family to move out of their home and into the converted garage of her grandparents’ house when she was nine years old. In order to support her family, Gomez began working part-time as a voice actress and advertising director.
At the age of nine, she experienced what is known as a “mid-life crisis” and decided to pursue a career in the music industry. She initially attended a public school, but had to complete her studies at home for fear of bullying.
She said she was frequently attacked due to her work in the entertainment industry and that several girls had previously attacked her while she was in the bathroom.
Gomez played Claudia Gómez in the 2008 short film El Tux and Nina in the television film La estación de la Calle Olvera on Discovery (2008). In 2009, she joined the girl group GLAM and later the other girl group BCG. In 2009, she participated in the filming of the GLAM music video for the song “JellyBean”.
Gomez also began using Garageband around this time to self-record rap and vocal songs, and created a YouTube account to upload her original versions of popular songs online.
She also began writing her own songs, and by the age of thirteen she had already mastered the guitar. When Gomez was thirteen, she became friends with the production team The Jam because they liked Gomez’s writing.
The group began writing songs together, resulting in covers of “Otis”, “Lighters”, “Novacane”, “Take Care” and “Boyfriend” (2011), as well as the original song “Turn the Music Up” .
These tracks were supposed to be on the @itsbeckygomez mixtape, but it never happened. Producer Dr. Luke, who has worked with artists like Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears, among others, was drawn to her cover of “Otis.”
Gomez was ready to meet Luke, who then signed her to his label Kemosabe Records through RCA Records after letting her play guitar for him.
Gomez first rose to prominence in 2011 when she began posting videos of herself covering popular songs online. One of his videos caught the attention of producer Dr. Luke, who later offered him a joint recording contract with Kemosabe Records and RCA Records.
Gomez collaborated with artists Cher Lloyd, Cody Simpson and will.i.am on her self-titled album. “Becky from the Block”, her first official song, was well received when it was released in 2013. Later that year, she released Play It Again, her first extended play.
Pitbull provided guest vocals on his second and first song of 2014, “Can’t Get Enough”, which topped the Latin Rhythm Airplay charts nationally. Gomez achieved mainstream popularity with the release of “Shower” the same year, which entered the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The record was later certified multiplatinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), indicating that it sold two million copies in the country.
Following the success of “Shower”, Gomez released the singles from her next album “Can’t Stop Dancin'”, “Lovin’ So Hard” and “Break a Sweat” in 2014 and 2015. Between September and October 2015, she and J Balvin embarked on a cross-country tour of the United States as co-headliners.
She contributed two new songs to the soundtrack of the musical television series Empire and played Valentina Galindo in two episodes of the series. In June 2016, she released “Sola”, her first entirely Spanish song.
She and rapper Bad Bunny collaborated on the single “Mayores”, released in July 2017 and reached number three on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart, while topping the charts in Spain, Ecuador, Chile and El Salvador. The same year, she performed in Argentina, Chile and Mexico as the opening act for girl group Fifth Harmony’s Latin American leg of their PSA tour.
She co-wrote with Dominican artist Natti Natasha and released the hit “Sin Pijama” in April 2018. It debuted at number one in Spain and reached the top 10 in several other countries. It also reached the top 5 on Hot Latin Songs.
Due to her success, she has collaborated with musicians such as Daddy Yankee, Christina Aguilera, and David Guetta. In addition to the prestigious Extraordinary Evolution Award, six Premios Juventud and four Latin Grammy Award nominations, she has won two American Music Awards, four ASCAP Latin Awards, four Latin American Music Awards and been nominated for four Grammy Awards.
