He previously served as president and COO of Capital Cities/ABC from 1995 until the company’s acquisition by Disney in 1996, and then president of ABC Television from 1994 to 1995.

Iger served as chairman of Disney from 2000 to 2005, then succeeded Michael Eisner as CEO until his contract expired in 2020. From that point on, he served as executive chairman until his retirement from the company in 2021.

Iger unexpectedly assumed the position of CEO of The Walt Disney Company on November 20, 2022, after the sudden resignation of his successor Bob Chapek.

He grew up in Oceanside, California, where he attended Fulton Avenue School and Oceanside High School before graduating in 1969.

Iger grew up with a passion for reading. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in television and radio from the Roy H. Park School of Communications at Ithaca College in 1973, where he graduated with honors.

Bob Iger began his media career in 1972 as host of Campus Probe, an Ithaca College television show. While working as a meteorologist in Ithaca for five months, he dreamed of becoming a news anchor before changing his career goals.

Iger joined the American Broadcasting Company in 1974. (ABC). His first job paid him $150 a week for menial work on televisions.

Iger was the senior program director for the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. The event was marred by bad weather and delayed events, so Iger’s team focused on human interest stories such as the Jamaican bobsled team and Eddie the Eagle to fill the broadcast schedule.

The Walt Disney Company purchased Capital Cities/ABC in 1995 and renamed it ABC, Inc., of which Iger served as president until 1999.

On February 25, 1999, Disney named Iger president of Walt Disney International, the business unit responsible for Disney’s international operations, and president of the ABC Group, removing him from day-to-day authority over ABC. Disney described the change as a promotion for Iger.

On January 24, 2000, Disney named Iger president and chief operating officer (COO), making him the company’s second-highest-ranking executive after Chairman and CEO Michael Eisner.

Disney has not had its own president since Eisner took over after Michael Ovitz left in 1997 after 16 months with the company.

In October 2020, he joined the board of directors of Perfect Day, a heavily funded milk replacement startup. In March 2022, Iger was appointed to the board of directors of Genies, Inc.
