Career of Caleb Love

Love made his collegiate debut against the College of Charleston and led all scorers with 17 points, four assists and two steals.

Love defeated rival Duke 91-87 on February 6, 2021, with a career-high 25 points and 7 assists. On February 8, 2021, Love received his second Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Freshman of the Week award.

He averaged 10.5 points and 3.5 assists per game, earning him a spot on the ACC All-Freshman team. Roy Williams, the veteran head coach of the Tar Heels, retired after the season.

Love considered his options before deciding to play his sophomore season in Chapel Hill. In his first season, he averaged 10.5 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.6 assists.

Love was a key member of the Iron Five starting lineup in head coach Hubert Davis’ first season following Williams’ retirement.

He started alongside RJ Davis, Leaky Black, Brady Manek, a transfer from Oklahoma, and Armando Bacot. The Iron Five played a big role in the team’s success en route to the national championship game after an up-and-down season for Love and the rest of the team.

Love started all but one of 39 games played this season and set career highs in total games played, three-point field goal percentage and games started.

He averaged 37.1% shooting from the field and 36% from distance for the season, averaging 15.9 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game.

In the Sweet Sixteen of the 2022 NCAA Tournament, Love led fourth-seeded UCLA 73-66 by scoring 27 of her career-high 30 points in the second half.

Love scored 28 points in the Tar Heels’ 81-77 victory over the Duke Blue Devils in their next Final Four game against them, including a crucial three-pointer late in the game.

Love, Black, RJ Davis and Bacot all made the decision to return for the 2022-2023 season given the previous season’s late season success. Despite high expectations and a No. 1 preseason finish, the season quickly went downhill for Love and his teammates.

After much speculation, Love decided to play his senior season at Michigan. Following his commitment to Michigan, Caleb will decommit on May 17 and re-enter the transfer portal.
