Alone is an American story-themed survival competition series that follows the self-documented daily struggles of ten individuals (seven paired teams in season 4) as they survive alone in the wilderness for as long as possible with a limited amount of survival equipment.
Participants will be isolated from each other and any other person, with the exception of medical examinations. If you fail a health check, you can log out or delete at any time. The contestant who stays the longest wins the grand prize of $500,000 (increased to $1,000,000 in season 7).
Each season was filmed primarily in indigenous regions such as northern Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Nahuel Huapi National Park in Argentina, Patagonia, northern Mongolia, Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories and Lake Chirco in central England, Colombia.
Participants will be dropped off in a wilderness area far enough away to avoid contact with each other. This process begins in mid to late fall. As winter approaches, cold temperatures and food shortages increase the challenges of survival under time pressure. Terrain may vary depending on participant location, but drop zones are pre-assessed to ensure each participant distributes their local resources fairly.
Each participant selects 10 items from a pre-approved list of 40 items of survival equipment and receives a set of standard equipment, clothing and first aid/emergency supplies. They also receive cameras with which they can record their daily experiences and emotions. To live in the wild as long as possible, participants must find food, build shelters and endure profound isolation, physical deprivation and psychological stress.
Competitors who wish to withdraw from the competition for any reason (known as “tap out”) may notify the rescue team using the satellite phone provided. Additionally, medical professionals will conduct regular medical examinations of participants and may, in their sole discretion, disqualify and evacuate those who are no longer safe to participate. The last remaining participant wins a $500,000 prize. Contestants were warned that the show could last up to a year.
The series premiered on June 18, 2015. Before the first season’s finale on August 19, it was announced that the series had been renewed for a second season. Production is expected to begin in fall 2015 on Vancouver Island, Canada. Season 2 premiered on April 21, 2016. Season 3 was filmed in Patagonia, Argentina in the second quarter of 2016 and premiered on December 8.
One day before the premiere of the third season, History announced that casting for the fourth season had begun. The fourth season, set in northern Vancouver Island, shows the dynamic development of the team and premiered on June 8, 2017.
Season 5 takes place in northern Mongolia and the losers from the previous season return to compete. It premiered on June 14, 2018. Season 6 premiered on June 6, 2019 and featured ten new contestants ranging in age from 31 to 55. This activity takes place on a lake in the Northwest Territories of Canada, south of the Arctic Circle.
The seventh season premiered on June 11, 2020. Contestants took on the challenge of surviving in the North Pole for 100 days and won a million dollar prize. The spin-off series “Alone”: “The Beast” premiered on January 30, 2020. In this series, three people attempt to survive 30 days in the wilderness with no tools or supplies other than their own clothes and a freshly killed animal.
Arctic groups received 1,000-pound elk. Two other groups were sent separately to a Louisiana swamp and fed alligators and wild boars, respectively. Two new spin-off series have been ordered for 2022. Only: In “Frozen”, six former participants are abandoned in the middle of winter on the east coast of Labrador, where they must survive for 50 days.
Alone: The Skills Challenge sees three former participants return to demonstrate their bushcraft skills in a head-to-head building competition. Participants are provided with basic tools and can only use natural resources in their region. Both shows premiered in early August after the ninth season concluded. A tenth season premiered on June 8, 2023.
