ToggleBiography of Albert Pujols
Albert Pujols is a Dominican-American former Major League Baseball first baseman and designated hitter who played 22 seasons (MLB).
He played his first 11 seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, then nine-plus seasons with the Los Angeles Angels before joining the Los Angeles Dodgers for half a season. In Spanish, it was nicknamed “The Machine” or “La Máquina”. He returned to the Cardinals for his final season in 2022.
Pujols was a highly regarded hitter who long displayed a “combination of contact hitting ability, patience and raw power.”
He was named National League (NL) MVP in 2005, 2008 and 2009 and is an 11-time All-Star (2001, 2003-2010, 2015, 2022).
Pujols was raised by his grandmother, whose name was America Pujols, and ten of his uncles and aunts in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and at that time, Albert was the only child in the family.
His father, Bienvenido Pujols, was a softball pitcher who struggled seriously with alcoholism.
This meant that Pujols had to take on the task of driving his father home after games, and because of his love of baseball, during his formative years Pujols played baseball with limes for balls and a carton of glove milk.
He received a baseball scholarship to Maple Woods Community College after completing a semester of high school in early December 1998.
In the first game of his only college season, Pujols hit a grand slam and an unassisted triple play.
As a rookie, he hit .461 with 22 home runs before declaring for the Major League Baseball (MLB) draft.
Only Henry Aaron has more RBIs and total bases in major league history than Pujols.
He and Aaron are the only two players with more than 2,200 RBIs. (Babe Ruth has over 2,200 RBIs, but only unofficially, because he played six seasons before RBIs were recognized as a statistic.)
Only two other players have more than 6,000 total goals (Stan Musial and Willie Mays). Pujols ranks fourth in career home runs and fifth in doubles.
With 185 assists in 2009, Pujols set the major league record for assists by a first baseman in a single season.
