ToggleThe career of Alvin Bragg
In June 2019, Bragg launched his bid to replace Cyrus Vance Jr. as New York County District Attorney in 2021, who was not seeking re-election at the time.
Bragg became New York County’s first elected African American district attorney on November 2, 2021, defeating Republican Thomas Kenniff in the general election. It was inaugurated on January 1, 2022.
After just three days in office, on January 4, 2022, he declared that his office would no longer prosecute low-level crimes, including fare evasion, resisting arrest, prostitution and cannabis offenses, unless that they are not linked to a single crime.
The lead prosecutors in the New York District Attorney’s investigation into Donald Trump and his companies, Carey R. Dunne and Mark F. Pomerantz, resigned unexpectedly on February 23, 2022, after Bragg told them he was not sure whether to continue proceedings against Mr. Atout. Asset.
According to the New York Times on November 21, 2022, prosecutors “accelerated their criminal investigation into Trump’s alleged payment of ‘hush money’ to a porn star who claimed to have had an affair with Mr. Trump.”
In January 2023, Bragg told CNN that the investigation was still ongoing. Trump’s involvement in the payment was the subject of information the office provided to a grand jury on January 30.
On July 7, 2022, a customer attacked José Alba, an employee of the bodega, over a bag of chips. Alba tried to defuse the situation, but defended himself with a knife after being pushed against a wall and murdered the attacker.
Exercising his prosecutorial discretion, Bragg elected to prosecute Alba and set bail at $250,000.
After attempting to stab the deceased attacker with Alba’s knife, the deceased attacker’s girlfriend also attacked Alba with her own knife. Bragg decided not to pursue her.
After facing much criticism, Bragg ultimately decided to dismiss the murder charge against Alba because it was impossible at trial to determine whether Alba was responsible for the death.
The Washington Post reported on September 6, 2022, that Stephen Bannon would be indicted by Bragg prosecutors on September 8 on the same fraud charges for which then-President Trump granted him a federal pardon in 2020.
The danger that Mr. Bannon appeared to have avoided with a presidential pardon in 2021 was reignited on September 8, when Bannon was accused of misleading citizens who wanted to donate to the construction of a southern border wall. He pleaded not guilty.
