ToggleWho is Carolyn Bryant?
Carolyn Bryant, daughter of a plantation manager and a nurse, was from Indianola, Mississippi, center of the segregationist and racist white Civic Council. She dropped out of high school, won two beauty pageants and married former soldier Roy Bryant.
The couple ran Bryant’s Grocery & Meat Market, a small grocery store that sold food to black sharecroppers and their children. The store was located on the corner of Main Street in the small town of Money, in the heart of the cotton-producing Mississippi Delta. They had two sons and lived in two small rooms behind the store.
To earn extra income, Roy worked as a truck driver with his half-brother JW. He served in World War II and received a combat medal. On the night of August 24, 1955, after picking cotton in the hot sun, Emmett Till went to Bryant’s Grocery Store with cousins and friends. Men went to the store alone or in pairs to buy sodas or chewing gum. Emmett went in and bought two cents worth of gum. But what exactly happened next has not been confirmed. She ran out of the store. The kids outside said she was going to get a gun. Frightened, Emmett and his group left.
When the trial opened in September, national and international press flocked to the scene. Roy, Carolyn and JW became celebrities. Some reporters talked about Roy and Carolyn’s “pretty looks,” as well as JW’s tall stature and big cigars. They even referred to Carolyn as “Roy Bryant’s most attractive wife” and “Marilyn Monroe at the crossroads.”
Carolyn testified under oath, but outside the presence of the jury, that Emmett made “nasty comments” to her before the whistle.
When they were acquitted, the men then sold their story to journalist William Bradford Huie for $4,000. Two of his lawyers helped facilitate the interview, which was published in Look magazine in January 1956. After the city’s support at trial, the men freely recounted how they killed the young Chicago teenager. But shortly after the article appeared, the two men were ostracized.
In August 1955, Chicago teenager Emmett Till died a horrible death. The black boy was lynched while visiting family in Mississippi. No one has ever been convicted of this crime, but an outstanding arrest warrant for Carolyn Bryant Donham was recently discovered.
The Mississippi attorney general’s office said it would not prosecute Donham because there was no new evidence in the case. On this date in 1934, the birth of Carolyn Bryant was confirmed. She is a white American employee, witness and plaintiff in the Emmett Till case.
Timothy Tyson, a senior researcher at Duke University, revealed that Bryant admitted in 2007, at the age of 72, that he made up the most sensational parts of his statement. “That’s not true,” she told Tyson of his claim that Till made verbal and physical advances toward her. She said she did not remember the rest of the evening spent at the village store. (Carolyn is now 86 years old and her family has kept her current whereabouts a secret.)
