He was born to Terrence Parsons and Sherese Parsons. Parsons has the same parents as his two siblings; a brother named Terrence Parsons and a sister named Shatara Parsons.

Parsons is 1.90 m tall and weighs 111 kg. He completed his high school education at Central Dauphin High School and later attended Penn State University in Pennsylvania.

He was born American. Parsons plays for the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League (NFL).

Parsons recorded 121 tackles, 27 tackles for a loss and 18.5 sacks as a freshman. As a junior, he recorded 69 tackles, 20 tackles for loss and 13.5 sacks. Parsons totaled 1,239 rushing yards as a senior and ranked ninth in the state with 27 rushing touchdowns, 99 receiving yards and two receiving scores.

Nebraska, Georgia, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Alabama and Penn State recruited Parsons. On December 19, it was revealed that Ohio State had violated NCAA rules by allowing the student to take a photo with commentator Kirk Herbstreit on the College GameDay set.

Herbstreit was a former Ohio State University quarterback and, as such, it was against NCAA regulations for recruiters to interact with the media of former student-athletes. Because of this, Ohio State decided to stop recruiting Parsons.

Just four games into his freshman season, Penn State University offered Parsons a football scholarship. He initially enlisted in the spring of 2016, broke off for a time, then re-enlisted on December 20, 2017.

To speed up the enrollment process, he graduated from Harrisburg High School seven months early. Penn State head coach James Franklin told Parsons he would begin his career there as a middle linebacker rather than the defensive end he had played in high school.

Franklin also mentioned that Parsons, a true freshman, would compete for the starting spot.

Parsons only played in one of the Nittany Lions’ 13 games as a freshman, but still managed to make 82 tackles, good for first on the team. He also contributed 4 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, 10 quarterback hurries and 2 forced fumbles.

As a freshman, he became the first Nittany Lion to lead the team in tackles. After sophomore linebacker Cam Brown was suspended for a violation, Parsons took over the outside linebacker role against Rutgers University and recorded 7 tackles and a strip-sack.

In the 2019 Citrus Bowl game against the University of Kentucky, he recorded 14 tackles (one for a loss) and a strip-sack. He finished second to wide receiver Rondale Moore in Big Ten Freshman of the Year voting.

Parsons was placed on the preseason watch list for the Butkus Award before the start of his sophomore season. He played at middle linebacker in 12 of the 13 games he started and collected 109 tackles (14 for loss), 5 sacks, 26 quarterback hurries, 5 pass deflections and 4 forced fumbles.

Parsons was later named a unanimous All-American and Butkus-Fitzgerald Linebacker of the Year. Parsons had 14 tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles en route to being named the 2019 Cotton Bowl Classic Defensive Player of the Year.

Due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, he decided to forgo the 2020 season and forfeit his remaining academic eligibility to enter the 2021 NFL Draft.

The Dallas Cowboys selected Parsons 12th overall in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. On June 9, 2021, he agreed to a four-year, $17 million rookie contract.

Before Week 2, DeMarcus Lawrence broke his foot during practice, so Dallas moved Parsons back to the defensive position he played in high school, where he found immediate success, particularly as a passer.

In a 20–16 victory over the Vikings in Week 8, Parsons recorded 11 tackles, including four for loss, earning NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Parsons had at least one sack on his resume in six straight games from Week 9 to Week 14.

His 12 sacks in his first 13 career games are the fourth-most for a rookie in NFL history, trailing only Julius Peppers (13), Reggie White (13) and Leslie O’Neal (12.5).

In a 22–10 win over the Rams in Week 5, Parsons recorded two sacks, five tackles and a tackle for loss, earning NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
