Tony Dungy was born on October 6, 1955 in Jackson, Michigan. He attended the University of Minnesota, where he played college football as a defensive back.
After graduating, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1977 and played for the team for four seasons. He then played for the San Francisco 49ers for one season before retiring from the NFL in 1981.
After retiring from the NFL, Dungy began his coaching career as a defensive assistant with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He then worked as defensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings and Tampa Bay Buccaneers before being named head coach of the Buccaneers in 1996.
He served as the team’s head coach for six seasons, leading the Buccaneers to the playoffs four times and the NFC Championship Game in 1999.
In 2002, Dungy was hired as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. He held the position for seven seasons, leading the team to the playoffs each year and winning the Super Bowl in 2007. After the 2008 season, Dungy retired from coaching and became a commentator for the show “Football Night in America” from NBC. He also works as a motivational speaker and author and has written several books on leadership and faith.
