Biography of Da Brat

Shawntae Harris, originally from Chicago, started rapping at the age of eleven. He was born on April 14, 1974 in Chicago. Brat grew up in two different families, as she was born to a Chicago city bus driver and her parents were never married.

She attended an Apostolic church and participated in choir four times a week while living part-time with her mother and grandmother. As a student at Kenwood Academy in Chicago, she ran track and played basketball.

She graduated in 1992 from the Academy of Scholastic Achievement, a charter school serving at-risk youth.

Da Brat’s musical career

Da Brat began her music career in 1992 by participating in a rap battle which she won. YES ! MTV Raps sponsored the show.

After winning the local competition, she was introduced to her music producer Jermaine Dupri by aspiring rap duo Kris Kross. Eventually, Da Brat got the chance to sign with his label “So So Def Label”.

Da Brat’s first studio album, Funkdafied, was released in 1994 and was certified platinum and was a huge success. Brat became the first solo rapper to sell a million copies of an album.

The album’s lead single, “Funkdafied”, charted on various rap charts and peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100. TLC’s T-Boz sang on the viral hit “Ghetto Love”, one of the songs from the album.

Da Brat made an appearance on a season of the television sketch show All That between 1994 and 1995. She then made her acting debut in 1996, playing a small role in the fantasy musical comedy Kazaam.

From 1996 to 2003, she played the lead role in “Soul Train.” Bernice “Boo” Walker from The Parent ‘Hood was played by Brat.
