He was born in Broomall, Pennsylvania, United States of America. Growing up, Bonaduce said he suffered emotional and physical abuse from his father.
His father was a television screenwriter and producer, and while he constantly mistreated him, his mother remained helpless. He also said that he grew up in a dysfunctional family.
In the 1970s, Bonaduce rose to fame as a young actor on the television sitcom The Partridge Family. He played the bassist of the fictional pop group and played Danny Partridge, the funny, red-haired middle child of the singing family group (led by Shirley Jones).
