Hopkins attended D.W. Daniel High School in Central, South Carolina, where he competed for the Lions athletic teams in football, basketball, and track.

Hopkins was a promising prospect after graduating from Clemson and making it to the NFL Combine. He completed nearly every combine drill, but was unable to complete the three-cone drill due to an apparent calf issue.
He attended Clemson’s Pro Day on March 7, 2013. Hopkins had two private workouts or visits with the St. Louis Rams in addition to private sessions with the Dallas Cowboys, Carolina Panthers, and New England Patriots.
Hopkins was selected by the Houston Texans with the 27th overall pick in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He was selected as the second receiver immediately after Tavon Austin (St. Louis Rams, 10th overall).
Hopkins became the second wide receiver in team history to be selected in the first round; The first was Andre Johnson, who finished third overall in 2003.

Hopkins had a career-high 115 catches, 1,572 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns at the end of the 2018 season. He ranked second in receiving yards and third in the league in receptions.
Hopkins had 104 receptions for 1,165 yards and seven receiving touchdowns at the end of the 2019 season. He was ranked eighth by his fellow players on the 2020 NFL Top 100 Players list.
On March 16, 2020, the Texans traded running back David Johnson, a 2020 second-round pick and a 2021 fourth-round pick, to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for Hopkins and a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
The NFL said Hopkins will miss the first six games of the 2022 season on May 2, 2022 because he violated the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs.
Hopkins made a return in Week 7, rushing for 103 yards in a 42-34 win over the New Orleans Saints. He had 12 receptions for 159 yards and a score in the 34-26 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 8.
Hopkins played in nine games of the 2022 season. In total, he had three receiving touchdowns, 717 receiving yards and 64 receptions. Hopkins was released by the Cardinals on May 26, 2023.
