His father was from Maribor, now in Slovenia, and his mother from Styria. Some sources believe that his ancestors are in the Zadar region, where he is said to have had relatives and where the surname Matei was popular. He describes himself as a cosmopolitan Styrian.

Both his parents were teachers, and he studied marketing for ten years at the University of Global Business, now the Vienna University of Economics and Business. Extreme sports caught his attention and passion from a very young age.

In 2017, Mateschitz and his Bundesliga club RB Leipzig came under fire after supporting Donald Trump and other populist causes in an interview with Kleine Zeitung. He also suggested that Austria close its borders to refugees.

He went on to sharply criticize the German and Austrian governments for their actions during Europe’s refugee crisis in 2015.
