Craig Delano Melvin, American journalist and news anchor for NBS News and MSNBC, was born on May 20, 1979, in Columbia, South Carolina. His parents were Lawrence and Betty Melvin. Craig Melvin has an older half-brother named Rev. Lawrence Meadows, who died of colon cancer in December 2020, and also had a younger brother named Ryan Melvin.

He was elected the first African-American president of Key Club International in 1996. He graduated from Wofford College in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts in government. He was a senior advisor to the Palmetto Boys State program in South Carolina and a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity.

Career and career timeline

As a high school student in Columbia, South Carolina, Melvin began working as “Our Generation Reporter” for NBC affiliate WIS-TV from 1995 to 1997. After graduating from college, he returned working for WIS in July 2001 as a reporter, photographer and producer before joining the morning news team as a reporter and creating its live “Craig Cam” segments. Before directing the weekday newscasts, he then hosted the weekend morning and evening newscasts. Melvin also developed numerous programs for WIS-TV, including on issues related to Columbia’s homeless population and schools. Melvin left WIS-TV in July 2008 to work for NBC at Washington station WRC-TV, where he anchored weekend newscasts. Three years later, in July 2011, Melvin left WRC-TV to work as a daytime anchor on MSNBC. He continued to work as a reporter for NBC News. Along with NBC News, Melvin anchored TV One’s coverage of Election Night 2012 and MSNBC’s coverage of the Republican and Democratic National Conventions. He also covered the Sandy Hook shootings in December 2012.

In 2013, he covered the May Moore tornado, the Asiana Airlines Flight 214 disaster and the George Zimmerman trial. In 2014, Melvin covered the death of Hannah Graham in September and the shooting of Michael Brown in August. He covered the death of Freddie Gray in June of that year as well as the Charleston church incident. In 2016, Melvin was one of the NBC correspondents who covered both the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in August and the tragic police shooting in Dallas in July. That same year, he also succeeded José Dáz-Balart as host of MSNBC Live, which later became MSNBC Reports.

Melvin anchored Dateline: secrets revealed, a true crime show, in 2017. On July 21, Oxygen aired its debut. Melvin covered the Winter Olympics from Pyeongchang County for NBC in February 2018. In September, he was named anchor of the Today’s Weekday show and in October, he joined the presenting line-up of Today’s Third Hour. Melvin co-hosted NBC’s annual presentation of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting in December 2020. Melvin said in March 2022 that he would stop hosting his hour of MSNBC Reports to focus on Today .

Personal life and children

Craig lived in Connecticut with his wife Lindsay Czarniak, a former ESPN sports anchor and former WRC-TV sports reporter. They were blessed with two children: Delano, born in March 2014, and a daughter, Sybil, born in November 2016.
