Bruce, who always considered herself bisexual but chose to identify as a lesbian, became engaged to Benet. However, his relationship with the actress did not end happily and all information about his personal life was hidden.

Bruce worked as Benet’s secretary on Days of Our Lives. At this time, Benet was going through a period of mourning. She was dealing with the loss of her son and her recent divorce from ex-husband Bill Bixby. After one child and ten years of marriage, the actress divorced Bixby in 1979. Then, on March 1, 1981, she lost her son Christopher Sean Bixby to a rare childhood illness called acute epiglottitis.
