Ganga Harjeevandas Kathiawadi hailed from Gujarat and made a name for herself as one of the most famous and influential brothel owners in Mumbai. At a young age, she was sold into prostitution by her admirer Ramnik Lal after fleeing her home to Bombay. He was an influential pimp in a city with underworld connections, and she became known as the Kamathipura Madam because she sold drugs.

Gangbai, 16, and her husband Ramnik, 28, fled to Mumbai and got married. Just a few days after her marriage, her husband sold her to a kuntankhana (brothel) for ₹1,000. Ganubhai reluctantly begins working as a prostitute. Soon, Gangbai became the head of several Kuntankhanas. A goon named Shaukat Khan Pathan started exploiting her financially and physically.
Gambai went to Don Karim Lala, then hell, to complain about Patan. Lara promised to help her and tied Rakhi for her. Shaukat Khan is then warned and beaten by Lala. Since then, Gangubai’s reputation has grown as the alleged sister of Karim Lala in the 1960s. St. Anthony’s Girls’ High School, established in Kamathipura in 1922, launched a campaign to rid the area of ”bad influence “. This led to the order to move the brothel. Gangbai put up stiff resistance and actually lodged a complaint with the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. The brothel did not move after that.
During this period, Gangubai also catered to the various needs of orphans and women working in the prostitution sector. Ganubhai fled his homeland to act in films, counseling and discharging many young women stuck in prostitution. That’s why everyone named Ganga Maa (mother) after her. After his death, his photo and statue were placed in neighborhood brothels.
