King was first attracted to music when he went to church and sang. He then followed his mother’s cousin, Bukka White, a blues guitarist, to Memphis, where he began appearing on Sonny Boy Williamson’s radio show. There he began to gain followers.

King began a career in the music industry in the late 1940s and 1950s when he joined the Beale Streeters. He played alongside Bobby Bland, Johnny Ace and Earl Forest.

After his equally successful stint with the Beale Streeters, he embarked on a successful solo career. In 1956 alone, he embarked on a mega tour and performed 342 concerts that year alone.

King won a Grammy Award for his version of “The Thrill is Gone,” which Rolling Stone magazine named one of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time in 1970.

Of the 20 nominations he received throughout his career, he won 16 in various categories, including Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, Best Ethnic or Traditional Recording, Best Pop Instrumental Performance, Best Traditional Blues Album, and “Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals” to name a few. just a few.

King died in his sleep on May 14, 2015, from vascular dementia caused by a series of minor strokes due to his type 2 diabetes.
