Tab Hunter was born Arthur Andrew Kelm on July 11, 1931 in Manhattan, New York, to Gertrude Gelien and Charles Kelm. He later died on July 8, 2018, three days before his 87th birthday. Tab has an older brother, Walter, with whom he grew up in California after his parents divorced due to his father’s reported abuse. He grew up in a Christian home as his mother was Catholic and his father Jewish.
He received his higher education at a Catholic school in California before spending time studying at the Hollywood Professional School. At the age of 15, he joined the United States Coast Guard, lying about his age.
During his time in the Coast Guard, he was nicknamed “Hollywood” because he preferred watching movies to drinking in bars. When his real age was discovered, he was released. Then he met actor Dick Clayton and gave him the idea of becoming an actor.
Hunter’s career in the film industry began in the 1950s, when he appeared in films such as “Desire Island” and “Battle Cry.” He quickly gained popularity, becoming a Hollywood heartthrob and being featured in several major magazines, including Tiger Beat and Teen Screen.
He also had a successful singing career and released several hits in the 1960s. Of particular note is his 1957 hit “Young Love”, which spent six weeks at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (seven weeks in the UK chart) and became one of Epoch’s biggest rock’n’roll hits. It sold over two million copies and received a gold disc from the RIAA.

Tab Hunter was romantically involved with Natalie Wood and Debbie Reynolds, both of whom he was close friends with. He later came out as gay in his 2005 memoir while dating Anthony Perkins, an actor. Hunter later married Allan Glaser in 2013.
On July 8, 2018, just three days before his 87th birthday, he suffered a cardiac arrest associated with deep vein thrombosis. He was buried in Santa Barbara Cemetery in California, United States.
