According to reports; The secret documents included briefing slides describing Ukraine’s military vulnerabilities and positions, as well as information on the circumstances under which Vladimir Putin might use nuclear weapons.
Information on allies such as Israel, South Korea and Turkey was also included, in what is considered the most serious security breach since the publication of 700,000 diplomatic documents, videos and cables on WikiLeaks in 2010.
The secret documents were shared in a chat group called “Thug Shaker Central,” created on Discord during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Teixeira ran an online chat room staffed primarily by teenagers with whom he allegedly exchanged top secret information for months.
It was only when intelligence was leaked outside the chat group that Pentagon officials became aware of the leak, triggering an extensive search for the culprit.
Although Teixeira’s motivations for sharing the documents are unclear, other members of this chat group claimed that he was motivated by courage rather than ideology.
Jack Teixeira is expected to be charged with suppressing or transmitting classified information relating to national defense, a crime under the National Espionage Act.
He will appear in court on Friday, April 14 in Boston, Massachusetts.
