By his own account, he was expelled from Repton School for “drinking, smoking and generally being a nuisance”. As is known, he completed A level with a C grade and two U (fail).
Clarkson traveled to Repton with former Top Gear executive producer Andy Wilman and Formula One engineer Adrian Newey.
He was cast as Atkinson, a prep school student, in a series adaptation of Anthony Buckeridge’s Jennings novels on BBC Radio’s Children’s Hour until his voice broke.

Clarkson’s first major television role was as presenter of the British motor show Top Gear from 27 October 1988 to 3 March 1999 in the show’s previous format.
