His father, Jimmy Kirkpatrick, left the family when he was only two years old. According to Mike’s memoir, he and his siblings had no idea who their father was.

He went on to say that his father was listed on his birth certificate as Jamaican taxi driver Percel Tyson. The problem was that neither he nor his siblings had ever met him in person before he left.
