He was born to Annabelle and John Allen Amos Sr., an auto mechanic. He grew up in East Orange, New Jersey and graduated from East Orange High School in 1958.
He is best known for his role as James Evans Sr. on the CBS television series Good Times. Amos also appeared on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The West Wing, in recurring roles as Admiral Percy Fitzwallace, and on the television series The District as Mayor Ethan Baker of Washington, DC.
During his five-decade career, Amos appeared on Broadway and in various films. He was nominated for the NAACP Image Award and the Primetime Emmy Award.
He has many supporting roles in films such as The Beastmaster (1982), Coming to America (1988), Die Hard 2 (1990), and Coming 2 America (2021).
