Smith-Schuster started playing soccer at the age of eight. As a tribute to his stepfather, he officially changed his last name from “Smith” to “Smith-Schuster” while in college.

In 2012, the football show changed his name from “John” to “JuJu,” a nickname an aunt gave him when he was little. Snoop Dogg coached Smith-Schuster when he was a youth player in the Snoop Youth Football League.
