Kate McKinnon, child actress, comedian and author, Kate McKinnon Berthold was born on January 6, 1984, in Sea Cliff, New York in the United States of America.
As a child, McKinnon played various instruments. She started playing the piano at the age of five. She started playing the cello at the age of twelve. At the age of fifteen, she began teaching herself to play the guitar.
After graduating from North Shore High School in 2002, she received a degree in theater from Columbia University in 2006. She also co-founded a musical improvisation comedy troupe there called Tea Party.
At Columbia, she appeared in three university productions: V109 Dial D for Deadline, V110 Off-Broadway, and V111 The Sound of Muses.
Her colleagues on set and on crew included future actresses Jenny Slate and Grace Parra, filmmakers Tze Chun and Greta Gerwig, and The Onion editor Peter Koechley.

McKinnon joined the original cast of The Big Gay Sketch Show on Logo TV in 2007 and remained a cast member for all three seasons.
Since 2008, she has regularly presented live sketch comedy at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in New York.
She also worked as a voice actor and lent her talents to shows such as Robotomy, The Venture Brothers, and Ugly Americans.
McKinnon received the 2009 Logo NewNowNext Award for Best Emerging Comic. In 2010, she was nominated for the ECNY Emerging Comic Award.

She was filming the Peacock miniseries Joe vs. Carole, in which she plays Carole Baskin, and missed the first seven episodes of season 47 of Saturday Night Live. The first day was March 3, 2022.
