Kate McKinnon, child actress, comedian and author, Kate McKinnon Berthold was born on January 6, 1984, in Sea Cliff, New York in the United States of America.

As a child, McKinnon played various instruments. She started playing the piano at the age of five. She started playing the cello at the age of twelve. At the age of fifteen, she began teaching herself to play the guitar.

After graduating from North Shore High School in 2002, she received a degree in theater from Columbia University in 2006. She also co-founded a musical improvisation comedy troupe there called Tea Party.

At Columbia, she appeared in three university productions: V109 Dial D for Deadline, V110 Off-Broadway, and V111 The Sound of Muses.
