Grammer was born in St. Thomas, Virginia, to Frank Allen Grammer and Sally Cranmer. He had a younger sister, Karen, and four half-siblings from his father’s second marriage.
Many family tragedies shaped Grammer’s personal life. Grammer was raised by his mother and maternal grandparents, Gordon and Evangeline Cranmer, in New Jersey after his parents’ divorce.
Later, when Grammer was twelve, the family moved to Pompano Beach, Florida, and shortly thereafter his grandfather died of cancer.
A crazed taxi driver killed his father in St. Thomas in 1968. His sister was kidnapped, raped and killed in Colorado Springs in 1975. His two teenage half-brothers died in a diving accident in 1980.
In Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Grammer attended the exclusive Pine Crest School preparatory school. It was there that he began singing and performing on stage.
Grammer then received a scholarship to study acting at the Juilliard School, where he was a member of Group 6 from 1973 to 1975. However, after the death of his sister, Grammer stopped going to school and eventually been released.

Grammer made his professional acting debut as Lennox in the 1981 Broadway version of Macbeth after receiving acting training at Juilliard and the Old Globe Theater.
The following year, he played the role of Cassio in Othello alongside James Earl Jones and Christopher Plummer. In 1983, he starred alongside Mandy Patinkin in Sunday in the Park with George, the first Off-Broadway production of the Stephen Sondheim musical.
He has since starred in performances of My Fair Lady and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
