Conroy was born in Westbury, New York and came from an Irish Catholic family. After spending a decade of his formative years in New York, he moved to Westport, Connecticut at age 11.

Conroy moved to New York in 1973 after receiving a full scholarship to the theater program at the Juilliard School, where he studied with actor John Houseman. While there, he shared a room with Kelsey Grammer and Conroy’s bandmate Robin Williams.

After graduating from Juilliard in 1978, he toured with Houseman’s acting troupe, The Acting Company, and appeared in the national tour of Ira Levin’s Deathtrap the following year.
