An illness in early childhood left her deaf, and other illnesses in early adulthood ended her competitive diving career.

Kitty O’Neil had started racing on water and land, competing in the Baja 500 and the Mint 400. Her all-time women’s land speed record stood until 2019 and was awarded the title of “Fastest Woman of the world.”

In 1976, she became the first woman to appear at Stunts Unlimited, the leading stunt agency. In December 1976, O’Neil set the land speed record for female drivers in the Alvord Desert in southeastern Oregon.

In 1977, O’Neil drove a hydrogen peroxide-powered rocket dragster built by Ky Michaelson in the Mojave Desert with an average speed of 279.5 mph (449.8 km/h).

In 1979, O’Neil’s experiences were the basis for the biographical film Silent Victory: The Kitty O’Neil Story, starring Stockard Channing.

As a stuntwoman, she appeared in The Bionic Woman, Airport ’77, The Blues Brothers, Smokey and the Bandit II and other television and film productions.

O’Neil retired from stunt and speed work in 1982 after fellow stunt performers were killed while performing. By the time O’Neil retired, she had set 22 land and water speed records.
