When Thompson was two years old, his family moved to Lake Oswego, Oregon, where he befriended and played Little League with Kevin Love, another future NBA player.
There, Thompson and his siblings received a Catholic education. When Thompson was 14, his family moved to Ladera Ranch, California. There he attended Santa Margarita Catholic High School, graduating from Rancho Santa Margarita in 2008.
During his junior year, he was selected to the Orange County Third Team and All-Region Second Team. Thompson led SMCHS to a 30-5 record and a berth in the Division III state championship as a senior by averaging 21 points per contest.
Thompson made a record seven 3-pointers in a single game during the state championship. He has received numerous awards, including League MVP, Best First Team All-West, Division III State Player of the Year, and EA Sports Second Team All-American.
After his junior season, Thompson declared for the 2011 NBA Draft and the Golden State Warriors selected him with the 11th overall pick. There were rumors that the Warriors traded starter Monta Ellis when that guard was selected, but that didn’t happen until March 2012.
In a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on January 29, 2013, Thompson scored a season-high 32 points. Thompson and Stephen Curry formed the best shooting tandem in NBA history, according to Warriors coach Mark Jackson.
On May 8, 2013, against San Antonio, Thompson scored a career-high 34 points in the playoffs, made 8 of his 9 three-pointers, and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds in the playoffs.
Thompson and the Warriors agreed to a four-year contract extension on October 31, 2014. The next day, he scored a career-high 41 points as the Warriors defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 127–104. In a 126–101 victory over the Sacramento Kings on January 23, 2015, Thompson scored a career-high 52 points, including 11 three-pointers.
In a game against the Los Angeles Clippers on March 8, 2015, Thompson made three three-pointers, surpassing head coach Steve Kerr (726) on the NBA’s all-time list. On March 17, he was diagnosed with a sprained ankle and was out for seven to ten days.
Through the first seven games of the 2015-16 season, Thompson made just 13 of 36 three-pointers (36%). Over the final 11 games in November, Thompson made a total of 32 of 73 attempts from distance (43.8%).
On January 27, he scored a game-high 45 points on 14 of 20 shooting in a 127–107 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. The following evening, he received his second consecutive All-Star nomination when he was selected as a Western Conference All-Star reserve for the 2016 NBA All-Star Game.
He competed in the All-Star Weekend three-point contest on February 13 and took first place after overtaking Stephen Curry and Devin Booker in the finals. He scored 40 points in a game against the Dallas Mavericks on March 25.
Through the first six games of the 2016-17 season, Thompson made 11 of 53 three-pointers (20.75%). Thompson then shot a total of 39 of 84 three-pointers (46.4%) in the final 11 games in November.
Additionally, Thompson joined Hall of Famer Rick Barry, Naismith Award winners Wilt Chamberlain and Joe Fulks in becoming the only Warriors players to reach 60 points since Barry’s 64 on March 26, 1974.
On October 29, 2017, Thompson became the 11th player in franchise history to surpass the 9,000 career point mark with 29 points in a 115–107 loss to the Detroit Pistons. On December 20, 2017, he defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 97–84 by scoring 27 of his 29 points in the first half and making his first nine field goals.
Thompson failed to score 20 points in his first seven games of the 2018-19 season, shooting 5 of 36 from beyond the arc. He went seven games without making multiple three-pointers, which was the worst slump of his career.
Thompson opted to stay with the Warriors on July 1, 2019, signing a five-year, $190 million contract with a fifteen percent trade kicker rather than making an All-NBA team, which, like Curry, made eligible, would have qualified for a supermax deal in 2017.
Thompson declared on January 8, 2022 that he would play again on January 9 against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Thompson scored 17 points in 20 minutes after his return, shooting 7 of 18 from the field and helping the Warriors to a 96-82 victory over the Cavaliers.
While competing for the United States, Thompson was part of the teams that won gold at the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup. He also won gold as part of the U19 team at the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championship.
