While advocating for the abolition of the death penalty and organizing anti-war protests, Sinema served as a regional spokesperson for the Green Party. He had planned 15 anti-war demonstrations before the start of the Iraq War.

She also opposed the war in Afghanistan. At a protest on February 15, 2003, at Patriots Square Park in Phoenix, a group led by Sinema distributed leaflets depicting an American soldier as a skeleton “leading ‘American terrorism’ in Iraq and the Middle East.”

In a 2003 opinion piece, Sinema claimed that Presidents George HW Bush and Ronald Reagan were the true lovers of Saddam and Osama.

Sinema made her official campaign announcement on September 28, 2017 for the Class I seat in the United States Senate currently held by Republican incumbent Jeff Flake, who decided not to seek re-election the following month.

In March 2018, Sinema donated $33,800 to a charity that she received as campaign funding from Ed Buck, a well-known Democratic donor who came under fire after a homeless man overdosed in his California home in 2017.

Sinema refused to engage in a debate with Deedra Abboud, an attorney and community activist who was her primary Democratic rival. The Democratic primary for the open Senate seat was won by Sinema in August.
