She is known for defending the rights of the LGBTQ population in the United States. Laverne was the first transgender person to receive a Primetime Emmy nomination for acting.
She also became the first Emmy nominee since composer Angela Morley in 1990. She rose to fame for her portrayal of Sophia Burset in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black.
Cox co-hosted and co-produced the revamped TV show TRANSform Me on VH1 and appeared on the inaugural season of the reality show I Want to Work for Diddy on VH1. In April 2014, Cox was honored by GLAAD with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award in recognition of her work on behalf of the transgender community.
