Manville was born to Noma Manville and Ron Manville. She has the same parents as her two older siblings and is therefore the youngest of her siblings.
She grew up in the nearby town of Hove. She began training in soprano singing at the age of 8 and represented Sussex twice as U18 champion.

Manville received improv lessons from Italia Conti teacher Julia Carey after declining teacher Arlene Phillips’ invitation to join her newest dance group, Hot Gossip.
She appeared in 80 episodes of the ITV series Emmerdale Farm (1974–76), which helped her pay for her first flat, and made her professional theater debut in the 1972 West End production of I and Albert, directed by John Schlesinger.
From 1978, Manville launched a successful acting career, appearing in new plays at the Warehouse and the Royal Court Theater of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
