Liz Cheney graduated from McLean High School in suburban Washington, D.C., in 1984, where she was a cheerleader. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Colorado College, her mother’s alma mater.
She received her J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School in 1996. While at the Oriental Institute, she also studied Middle Eastern history.
Liz Cheney worked for the State Department for five years before attending law school and for the United States Agency for International Development from 1989 to 1993.
She began her career as an intern at Armitage Associates LLP, a consulting firm founded by Richard Armitage, a former Defense Department official and then Deputy Secretary of State.
After graduating from law school, Liz Cheney worked as an international law attorney and consultant for the International Finance Corporation, a member of the World Bank Group.
She also served as Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of State for Assistance to the Soviet Union and USAID.
