Fickell was a standout defensive player in 1992 and made a school record 50 consecutive starts at nose guard from 1993 to 1996. During his junior year, he played alongside Dan Wilkinson.

Fickell started the 1997 Rose Bowl despite a torn pectoral muscle and made two tackles in the Buckeyes’ win over Arizona State. Fickell signed as an undrafted free agent with the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League in 1997.

After suffering a torn ACL, he was placed on the injured reserve list for the remainder of the season before being released.

After a brief stint in the NFL and as an assistant at Ohio State University in 1999, Fickell was hired as defensive line coach at the University of Akron in 2000.
