Mac DeMarco, Canadian children’s singer and songwriter, Mac DeMarco was born on April 30, 1990 in Duncan, British Columbia, on Vancouver Island in Canada.

DeMarco was born to Mac Smith III and Agnes DeMarco. He has the same parents as his younger brother, whose name is Hank.

DeMarco’s name was changed by his mother Agnes after his father Mac abandoned him when he was just four years old and also refused to pay child support.

The McKernan School was Mac DeMarco’s middle school. Around this time, he began taking guitar lessons from his grandmother.

During his high school years, he was a member of various bands, including Meat Cleavers, an alternative rock band, The Sound of Love, and Outdoor Miners, a post-punk band named after the song “Outdoor Miner” . English rock band Wire is named after the band’s current keyboardist, Alec Meen.

He began smoking cigarettes as a teenager, which has since played a significant role in his public appearances. DeMarco said he quit smoking in January 2023.

After graduating from Strathcona High School in Edmonton in 2008, DeMarco began working as a backup musician. He then moved to Vancouver.

Mac DeMarco Career

As a member of the indie rock band Makeout Videotape, he released his own album Heat Wave in 2009 while living in County Killarney. All 500 copies of the album were sold. During this period, DeMarco focused on “psychedelic” audiovisual projects.

He signed with Unfamiliar Records, toured with Vancouver band Japandroids in 2009 and was accompanied by Alex Calder and Jen Clement.

DeMarco moved to Montreal in 2011 to begin his solo career as an artist. Unable to find work as a musician, he earned money participating in medical research and working on a road construction crew.

The Captured Tracks label announced the signing of DeMarco on January 9, 2012. In early 2012, he released an LP titled Rock and Roll Night Club. The four-track album was recorded with slowed-down vocals and sketches.

DeMarco released the title track “Passing Out Pieces” and announced that his second album, Salad Days, would be released on January 21, 2014. The song was released on April 1, 2014 and Pitchfork named it “Best New Music” again.

DeMarco sang “Let Her Go” on Conan on March 30, 2015, marking his first talk show appearance (and his second television debut after The Eric Andre Show).

DeMarco announced the title of his new album Another One on April 22, 2015. The album and a video documenting its creation were both released on August 7, 2015.

Some Other Ones, a 9-track instrumental album by DeMarco subtitled “BBQ Soundtrack”, was released on July 8, 2015. Later that evening, he hosted a listening party in New York where fans could listen to Another One and receive free hot dogs in exchange for a donation to the food bank.

DeMarco announced the name of his third studio album, This Old Dog, on January 31, 2017. He also made two singles from the album available on the same day. On May 5, 2017, This Old Dog was made available.

On March 5, 2019, DeMarco introduced “Nobody”, the title track from his upcoming fourth studio album, Here Comes the Cowboy. On May 10, 2019, Mac’s Record Label released the album.

DeMarco appeared in the song “The Curse”, a collaboration with English musician Yellow Days, released on September 7, 2020. On October 28, 2020, DeMarco appeared again on the song “Moving Men” by French musician Myd.

The charity tribute album The Metallica Blacklist, to be released in September 2021, features a cover of Metallica’s song “Enter Sandman” by DeMarco.

After taking a break from live shows due to the COVID-19 outbreak, DeMarco resumed them in October 2021. His live band was revamped before returning to the stage, featuring veteran members Joe McMurray, Andrew White and Jon Lent, as well as Darryl Johns (bass) and JD Beck (drums).

Five Easy Hot Dogs, an instrumental album by DeMarco, was released on January 20, 2023. The fourteen-track album was recorded at various locations during a road trip from Los Angeles to Utah.

The song “Heart to Heart” from DeMarco’s previous album “Here Comes the Cowboy” went viral on TikTok the week after the release of Five Easy Hot Dogs. This made DeMarco’s song the first of his songs to enter the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 98 after receiving over 5.8 million streams in the United States in a single week.

As of the filing of this report, there are no records suggesting DeMarco is a father. He does not have children with his longtime girlfriend Kiera McNally.
