He was raised as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mike Leach graduated from Cody High School in 1979. Mike Leach played rugby for the Brigham Young University men’s rugby team from 1979 to 1983 and coached for Cal Poly, College of the Desert, Pori Bears, Iowa Wesleyan, Valdosta State, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Washington State.

He earned a Juris Doctor from Pepperdine University Law School in Malibu, California, in 1986 and was one of the most distinguished graduates of the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Alabama , where he earned a master’s degree in sports science in athletic training in 1988.

Mike Leach was hospitalized on December 11, 2022 due to an undisclosed health issue. In the evening of the same day, journalist Ross Delenger announced that Mike was in critical condition, specifying that Mike had suffered a massive heart attack and had not received medical attention for 10 to 15 minutes.

He said Mike also suffered seizures, which were the cause of the resulting brain damage. He died on Monday December 12, 2022 in hospital following health problems at the age of 61. He served as the head coach of Mississippi State University from 2020 until his death. His family has not yet announced final funeral arrangements.
