Williams played nine NBA seasons and for five NBA teams during his playing career from 1994 to 2003.

In May 2019, the Phoenix Suns announced that they had signed Williams to a five-year contract as the team’s head coach.
On March 9, Williams was named the 2021–22 NBA Coach of the Year, leading the Suns to a franchise winning record of 64–18 and the league’s best record after finishing second in voting the previous year.
In May 2023, Monty Williams made headlines when he was fired by the Phoenix Suns after losing to the Denver Nuggets in the NBA playoffs.
His firing comes just two days after the Denver Nuggets eliminated his team, the Phoenix Suns, in the Western Conference semifinals.
