Hood-Schifino committed to play for Jeff Capel and Pittsburgh while attending the Combine Academy. At the time, the Panthers’ acquisition of Pittsburgh-born Hood-Schifino was considered a significant recruiting success.
However, Hood-Schifino decided to reopen his recruiting after his sophomore year of high school. Just months after taking over as head coach in Bloomington in the summer of 2021, the Indiana Hoosiers committed to hiring Hood-Schifino.
In August 2021, Hood-Schifino committed to the Hoosiers. He was the team’s ninth-highest-rated recruit since 1998 and the Hoosiers’ highest-rated signing since Romeo Langford in 2018.
A mock NBA draft predicted Hood-Schifino would be selected in the first round prior to his first season with the Hoosiers. He was voted the league’s top preseason recruit by a group of Big Ten journalists.
Hood-Schifino was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and third-team All-Big Ten by coaches and media in his lone season at Indiana.
He played 33.1 minutes per game in 32 games (32 starts) and averaged 13.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists.
Hood-Schifino scored the most points by an Indiana freshman since Eric Gordon against Chattanooga in 2007 when he scored 33 points in an 84-83 loss to Northwestern at Assembly Hall on Jan. 8, 2023.
Hood-Schifino set an Indiana freshman scoring record on Feb. 25, 2023, scoring 35 points in a 79-71 win over Purdue at Mackey Arena.
Hood-Schifino announced his intention to enter the NBA draft on March 31, 2023, bypassing his remaining three years of college eligibility.
