Born August 25, 1995, Justin Jones is best known for his strong advocacy for gun control and racial justice. He began his political career as a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives for District 52, representing parts of Nashville.
Jones was elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives in January 2023, but his term was short-lived. On April 6, 2023, he was expelled from the House of Representatives for participating in an anti-gun control protest at the State Capitol in a manner that Republicans described as “disorderly conduct.” Despite this setback, Jones’ activism and leadership skills did not go unnoticed.
On April 10, 2023, he was reinstated by the Nashville City Council as an interim representative pending a special election to fill the seat.
Before serving in the Tennessee House of Representatives, Jones made a name for himself as an advocate for social justice. In 2019, he announced his candidacy for the United States House of Representatives in Tennessee’s 5th congressional district against Jim Cooper in the 2020 election.
Unfortunately, Jones did not submit enough valid signatures to appear on the ballot, which prevented him from participating in the election.
Jones has been involved in several high-profile incidents throughout his career. In October 2018, he was arrested for refusing to leave a Marsha Blackburn rally. The following year, he was accused of assaulting Tennessee House of Representatives member Glen Casada by throwing a glass at him. Following this incident, Jones was banned from the Capitol. However, Casada later agreed to drop the charges.
In 2020, Jones organized a 62-day sit-in for racial justice in front of the state capitol following the killing of George Floyd. During the protest, he faced 14 charges which were ultimately dropped.
