Marilyn Manson’s career
Manson first rose to prominence as the lead singer of the band of the same name, the band’s only constant since its inception in 1989.
His stage name, like those of the group’s other founding members, was born from the merger of the names of two contradictory American cultural icons: actress Marilyn Monroe and cult leader Charles Manson. He is known for his controversial stage presence and public persona.
Manson is best known for the albums he released in the 1990s, including Portrait of an American Family (1994), Antichrist Superstar (1996), and Mechanical Animals (1998). Combined with his public persona, these albums gave Manson a reputation in the media as a controversial figure who was a bad influence on young people.
Eight of the band’s releases have reached the Top 10, including two No. 1 albums, and three of their albums have achieved platinum or gold status in the United States alone.
Manson is ranked No. 44 on Hit Parader’s “Top 100 Heavy Metal Vocalists” list and has been nominated for four Grammy Awards with his band. Manson also received a separate Grammy nomination for his contribution to Kanye West’s song “Donda.”
Manson made his acting debut in 1997’s “Lost Highway,” directed by David Lynch. He has since had several small roles and guest appearances. His first exhibition, “The Golden Age of Grotesque”, was held at the Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions Center in 2002.
He is considered by many to be one of the most controversial figures in heavy metal music and has been involved in several conflicts throughout his career. American politicians have criticized him for his lyrics, which have also been the subject of legislative hearings.
Several American states have passed laws specifically banning the band from performing at government-run venues. Manson was falsely accused by the media in 1999 of influencing the Columbine High School shooters.
His videos and paintings were presented as evidence in a murder case and he has been charged with numerous other murders and school shootings. His art has been featured in a number of other violent incidents.
Several women have accused Manson of psychologically and sexually assaulting them in 2021, but he has denied the allegations.
