That all changed when she met Neil Giraldo, a tenacious rock guitarist whose licks gave Benatar exactly the sound she was looking for. In 1979, Benatar released his first album “In the Heat of the Night” with Giraldo as his backing band. The album was a huge success with two hit singles, “Heartbreaker” and “I Need a Lover”.
With her second album, Crimes of Passion, released a year later, Benatar solidified her position as a leading rock singer. The album was immediately certified platinum thanks to three major singles, “Hit Me With Your Best Shot”, “Treat Me Right” and “You Better Run”. Benatar’s career grew throughout the decade.
