That all changed when she met Neil Giraldo, a tenacious rock guitarist whose licks gave Benatar exactly the sound she was looking for. In 1979, Benatar released his first album “In the Heat of the Night” with Giraldo as his backing band. The album was a huge success with two hit singles, “Heartbreaker” and “I Need a Lover”.

With her second album, Crimes of Passion, released a year later, Benatar solidified her position as a leading rock singer. The album was immediately certified platinum thanks to three major singles, “Hit Me With Your Best Shot”, “Treat Me Right” and “You Better Run”. Benatar’s career grew throughout the decade. There were other popular albums and singles such as “Love is a Battlefield” and “We Belong”, the videos of which were heavily promoted on MTV.

However, her status as an icon of the 1980s did not translate well into the 1990s. While Benatar continued to release music, including albums such as Gravity’s Rainbow (1993) and Innamorata (1997), she struggling to match his previous success.
