Initially, he was the band’s bassist, but after the departure of Syd Barrett (vocalist and songwriter) in 1968, he also became their lyricist, co-vocalist and conceptual director.
The group has enjoyed international success with several projects including: The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall and The Final Cut.
By the early 1980s, Pink Floyd had become one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful groups in pop music. Due to creative differences, Waters left the group in 1983, leading to a legal dispute over the use of the group’s name and material. They later settled amicably.
As a solo artist, Waters organized “The Wall – Live in Berlin” in 1990, one of the largest rock concerts in history with 450,000 visitors.

In 2015, Waters reunited with his Pink Floyd bandmates Nick Mason, Richard Wright and David Gilmour for the global awareness event Live 8, the band’s only performance with Waters since 1981.
He has toured extensively as a solo artist since 1999, but his tour, the Wall Live Tour from 2010 to 2013, was the highest-grossing tour by a solo artist at the time.
Waters was inducted into the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and the British Music Hall of Fame in 2005 as a member of the band Pink Floyd.
