She was born on November 11, 1999 in the Bronx, New York, into a family of musicians and therefore developed a love for music at a very young age.
She studied at Fordham High School for the Arts, where she performed with the jazz band and was named best vocalist in Fordham University’s Essentially Ellington Competition.

Samara Joy learned about jazz in a meaningful way when she enrolled in SUNY Purchase College’s jazz program as a voice major and was named an Ella Fitzgerald Scholar.
She won the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition and was named Best New Artist by Jazz Times in 2021.
In February 2023, Samara Joy made headlines after winning the Best New Artist award at the 2023 GRAMMYs. This made her the second jazz singer to win this award, the first being Esperanza Spalding in 2011.
Samara Joy beat out Anitta, Omar Appollo, DOMi & JD Beck, Muni Long, Latto, Maneskin, Tobe Nwigwe, Molly Tuttle and Wet Leg to win the coveted prize. She also won Best Jazz Vocal Album for her project Linger Awhile (second album).
