Born in Los Angeles, Shareef O’Neal is the son of former National Basketball Association player Shaquille O’Neal and the former Shaunie O’Neal. He has two older half-siblings, Taahirah and Myles, and three younger siblings: Amirah, Shaqir and Me’arah. Despite his father’s basketball fame, Shareef grew up without a passion for the game, preferring skateboarding. His interest in basketball grew after having a disappointing performance in an Amateur Athletic Union game in middle school and having to “prove everyone wrong” on the court. At the age of 13, O’Neal began training regularly and was able to perform dunks.

From his first season, O’Neal played basketball for the Windward School in Los Angeles at the forward position. His star videos gained him instant popularity online and were featured in the Washington Post. However, he received limited playing time as the team’s six seniors earned the most minutes. Head coach Steve Smith considered O’Neal’s first season at Windward a “learning year” and expected him to take on a larger role the following season. By the end of the season, he was averaging 3.7 points and 2.9 rebounds per game. In May 2015, O’Neal received a scholarship offer from U.S.C.his first at an NCAA Division I program.
O’Neal remained at Windward for his second year and saw significant improvement. In October 2015, during a Fairfax High School tournament featuring many of the nation’s top high school teams, O’Neal scored 23 points in a loss to Bishop Alemany. O’Neal caught the attention of scouts during the MaxPreps Holiday Classic in December despite his team’s struggles. He became known as a versatile swingman with ball-handling, shooting and defensive skills.

O’Neal suffered a foot injury that kept him out of the Tigers’ first conference games of the 2020-21 season and was only able to play in 10 games total this season. He missed the first 12 games 2021-22 while he was recovering from his foot injury. He played in 14 games and averaged 2.9 points and 2.1 rebounds while playing an average of 9.4 minutes per game. After the season, he entered the transfer portal. On June 6, 2022, O’Neal declared for 2022 NBA Draft after being mistakenly placed on the list of early participants who withdrew from the draft.
