He developed a passion for ice hockey at a young age, and at a young age, Crosby began attracting media attention with his play, leading to his first newspaper interview at the age of seven years.
At the age of 13, the Nova Scotia Minor Hockey Council denied him permission to play midget, a level of minor hockey aimed at 15 to 17 year olds. His family sued but lost.
During his two-year major junior career with the Rimouski Océanic, he won numerous awards and led his club to the Memorial Cup final in 2005.
Crosby made his NHL debut during the 2005–06 season, scoring 102 points and finishing second in the Calder Memorial Trophy as NHL rookie of the year.
At age 18, he became the youngest player to reach 100 points in an NHL season. In his second season, he led the NHL with 120 points and won the Art Ross Trophy.
With this feat, he became the youngest player and only teenager to win a scoring title in a major North American sports league.

Since February 2023, Crosby has been a center ice hockey player and captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League. He was first selected by the Penguins in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.
