Is Steven Stayner married?

His captor convinced him that his parents had legally released him to him, which likely played a significant role in the boy’s inability to escape when he was free to go out. When he reached puberty, Parnell, who often sexually abused him, even attempted to use him as an accomplice in the kidnapping of other younger boys. However, all of these attempts failed because, according to Stayner, he intentionally sabotaged many of these attempts. After Parnell managed to kidnap five-year-old Timothy White, Stayner decided to return him to his parents and ran away with him. While Parnell was arrested and sentenced to prison, Murphy, who claimed to know nothing about the sexual abuse, was punished less harshly.

Steven Gregory Stayner was born on April 18, 1965, in Merced, California, to Delbert and Kay Stayer. He was the third of his parents’ five children and had an older brother Cary and three sisters.

At the age of seven, Steven Stayner was kidnapped on the afternoon of December 4, 1972, by Kenneth Parnell, who had previously been convicted of sodomizing a young boy and armed robbery in Utah . For the kidnapping, he enlisted the help of the naive and simple-minded Ervin Edward Murphy, posing as an aspiring minister who needed a baby boy to raise in religious enterprise. Murphy, responsible for distributing gospel tracts to schoolchildren, approached Steven Stayner, posing as a church representative, and asked if his mother would be willing to make a donation to the church. Young Stayner responded that his mother would make a donation, to which Murphy asked for his address and offered to accompany him home, to which he accepted.

Shortly thereafter, Parnell arrived there in a white Buick, which Stayner voluntarily got into with Murphy, but instead of being taken home, he was taken to a cabin in nearby Catheys Valley. Parnell, a sex offender, assaulted him the first night and began raping him thirteen days later, on December 17, 1972.

Parnell created a new identity for Stayner, giving him the new name Denis Gregory Parnell, but retaining his original middle name and date of birth. He was not held captive and was enrolled in several schools over the next few years, where Parnell identified himself as his father. Parnell moved from place to place for work, often taking Stayner with him, but sometimes leaving him alone and unsupervised. However, the boy was unable to take advantage of these opportunities because he did not know how to call for help. Stayner had a relaxed upbringing as his captor not only allowed him to move freely wherever he wanted, but also allowed him to start drinking at a young age. During this period, he became very attached to his dog Queenie, a Manchester Terrier.
