Young Stayner responded that his mother would make a donation, to which Murphy asked for his address and offered to accompany him home, to which he accepted.

Shortly thereafter, Parnell arrived there in a white Buick, which Stayner voluntarily got into with Murphy, but instead of being taken home, he was taken to a cabin in nearby Catheys Valley. Parnell, a sex offender, assaulted him the first night and began raping him thirteen days later, on December 17, 1972.

Parnell created a new identity for Stayner, giving him the new name Denis Gregory Parnell, but retaining his original middle name and date of birth. He was not held captive and was enrolled in several schools over the next few years, where Parnell identified himself as his father. Parnell moved from place to place for work, often taking Stayner with him, but sometimes leaving him alone and unsupervised. However, the boy was unable to take advantage of these opportunities because he did not know how to call for help. Stayner had a relaxed upbringing as his captor not only allowed him to move freely wherever he wanted, but also allowed him to start drinking at a young age. During this period, he became very attached to his dog Queenie, a Manchester Terrier.
