Later that year, Heinicke signed with the Houston Texans and was added to their practice squad. He was promoted to the active team in December but did not appear in any games.
In 2018, Heinicke signed with the Carolina Panthers, where he was reunited with his former college coach Bobby Wilder, who was now the team’s assistant offensive coordinator. In the 24-10 loss, he completed 33 of 53 passes for 274 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.

In December 2020, Heinicke signed with the Washington Football Team to serve as the backup quarterback behind Alex Smith. He played well in relief, completing 12 of 19 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 22 yards and another touchdown in a close loss to the Carolina Panthers.
