Larry Bird, special advisor to the Indiana Pacers, and Dinah Mattingly, his adoptive parents, were married in October 1989. Dinah and Larry had met at Indiana State University.

Larry Bird was born in West Baden Springs, Indiana, to Georgia (née Kerns) and Claude Joseph “Joe” Bird, a Korean War veteran. Connor’s adoptive grandparents on both sides of his family were of Irish, Scottish, and Native American descent.
Larry, his father, said poverty as a child still motivates him “to this day.” Connor’s grandfather Joe committed suicide shortly after his divorce from Georgia.
Connor Bird got into trouble with the law in 2013
Despite being the least eye-catching celebrity son, Connor still gained media attention in February 2013.
The son of an NBA legend, then 21, encountered law enforcement, but not kindly; Police arrested him at Indiana University after he allegedly tried to run over a former girlfriend with his car in Bloomington.
Connor allegedly tried to run the woman over with his Dodge Charger in the Indiana Memorial Stadium parking lot. According to then-university police chief Keith Cash, Bird could face charges of assault, criminal coercion, intimidation with a deadly weapon and possession of marijuana.
In February 2013, Larry and Dinah’s son was charged with three misdemeanors: criminal negligence with a vehicle, possession of less than 30 grams of marijuana and possession of battery for allegedly hitting the 20-year-old woman’s wrist with a phone portable.
Police say Conner and his ex-girlfriend got into an argument in his car on campus. Bird allegedly tried to hit Connor’s ex with her car after she got out of the car to go home.
According to Indiana University police, Connor threw his phone at his girlfriend during the argument. Police say the former Boston Celtics’ son threw a cellphone at the woman after Connor and his ex-girlfriend argued at Bird’s Bloomington apartment.
Later, Connor went to see his ex-friend and took her to a parking lot to talk about things. There, they started another argument and the woman got out of Bird’s car and started walking back to her house.
Connor Bird was convicted of trying to kill his girlfriend
In April 2014, a year after the crash incident, the court found Connor guilty of a lesser charge in a case in which he was accused of nearly running over a former girlfriend with his car.
Connor entered into a deferred sentence agreement and pleaded guilty to criminal recklessness. On the other hand, the court decided to dismiss his case on the condition that he successfully finalizes a 12-month compliance agreement filed in Monroe Circuit Court.
The judge said the case would be dismissed if he did not commit further crimes, participate in a mentoring program and complete all necessary treatment and counseling. Connor’s attempt to run over a woman wasn’t his first run-in with the law; In 2011, police charged him with disturbing the peace and illegal consumption of alcohol. The case never got that far because it was resolved through Monroe County’s pretrial diversion program.
